JEEPĀ® U.S. FREESKIING OPEN CELEBRATES 10th ANNIVERSARY WITH NEW LOCATION
Competition Set to Take Place Jan. 17-21, 2007, at Copper Mountain Resort
Boulder, Colo. - August 30, 2006 - SKIING magazine announced today that the JeepĀ® U.S. Freeskiing Open, the largest and most respected contest in freeskiing, will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a move to a fresh new location, Copper Mountain Resort. The event, which carries a $60,000 purse, is set to take place Jan. 17-21,
2007. For additional details including registration, please visit usfreeskiingopen.com
“This is going to be a legendary year for the Jeep U.S. Freeskiing Open,” said Jamie Pentz, publisher of SKIING, which owns and produces the event. “Copper is a world
class venue that really lends itself to this competition and we’re looking forward to celebrating our 10th anniversary with them as a partner.”
“Copper is thrilled to host the U.S. Freeskiing Open,” said Copper Mountain General Manager, Gary Rodgers. “Spectators will be able to watch the Main Vein Superpipe and
night big air competitions directly from the resort’s base area with all the convenience it offers.”
Event organizers also announced plans to involve the sport’s top athletes in the course design process, including the slopestyle course in Catalyst Terrain Park.
“We’re going to set a new standard for freeskiing events and will consult the athletes on every feature we build and every aspect of the course,” said Rodgers.
The Jeep U.S. Freeskiing Open is the longest running and premiere freeski event in the world. Ten years ago, the inaugural U.S. Freeskiing Open gathered freeskiing’s
biggest hopefuls - there were no big stars yet - for the first slopestyle skiing competition ever. The next year, a halfpipe discipline was added to the mix and scores of unknown skiers continued to pour in to lay claim to victory and shape a sport. The Jeep U.S. Freeskiing Open has served as a launch pad for countless new school skiers with a past winners list that reads like a who’s who guide to the freeskiing world including: Tanner Hall, J.P. Auclair, T.J. Schiller and Copper’s own Nick Mercon.
Today, the Jeep U.S. Freeskiing Open is the number one showcase for freeski athletes and a forum for cutting-edge skills and tricks. From Jan. 17-21, 2007, thousands of
spectators will witness more than 300 of the world’s top and up-and-coming new school athletes in head-to-head dream-making and dream-breaking competitions across
three disciplines: superpipe, slopestyle and big air. The event features one of the largest purses in freeskiing with $60,000 on the line.
Athletes can register for the 2007 Jeep U.S. Freeskiing Open online at usfreeskiingopen.com, beginning Dec. 5, 2006, at 5 p.m. MST. In 2006, the event set records when the hundreds of spots available for the men’s slopestyle and halfpipe disciplines filled in less than 20 minutes.
The 2007 Jeep U.S. Freeskiing Open is produced by SKIING. Associate sponsors include: Salomon, Xbox and Copper Mountain Resort.
